A NOTE FROM BRITA

As we head into our summer retreats and vacations, it seems that we have also hit the busy season for the Woman’s Club as well. Our membership has truly gone above and beyond in volunteering during the past few weeks with all the numerous activities happening with our own projects, but also helping the Literacy Coalition with the Pie Contest, the Senior Center Yard Sale, the CHP Summer Lunch Program just to name a few. Thank you to everyone who dedicated so much of their time to helping in every capacity. Our major events and fundraisers were such an enormous success because of your commitment. Lana and her enthusiastic team made the BBQ not only a lucrative undertaking, but a fun experience. Thank you to Carol and Ed Hesse for all the fantastic BBQ and homemade sauce. Being a vegetarian does put a damper on things once-in-a-while, but I’ve heard from so many others that this BBQ was the best they remember having.

The Town Hall meeting, held on May 27, was extremely well attended, with our new 9th District Representative, Tom Graves, and his then opponent, Lee Hawkins, as the main speakers. Very informative. The Memorial Day Celebration at the old Courthouse was probably one of the most unforgettable. The main hall was filled to capacity to listen to some of our city representatives welcome Ex POW, Col. Ben Purcell and his wife Anne. Col. Purcell spoke about his five years in captivity in Vietnam, but the culmination to this remarkable event was the presentation to Col. Purcell of a Vietnam POW/MIA metal bracelet with his name on it that a citizen of Dahlonega had been wearing for over forty years. It was an amazing moment.

Five of our talented members: Marge Jones, Audrey Crowley, Lana Hootselle, Karen Smith, and Marianne Gage all won trophies at the 5K Run/Walk held by the CHP Free Clinic. They truly made us proud. What a great accomplishment to finish that race, especially uphill! We are working on purchasing T-shirts and Polo shirts that we will be able to wear to events like this, announcing who we are. There are other wonderful things to come this summer with all the 4th of July activities and the Family Connections Pool Party. Be sure to check out the Dates to Remember. Also, the Georgia Appalachian Studies Center is having its Open House on June 14 and 15 from 10 am - 7 pm. Learn about the historic Vickery House, which the Woman’s Club helped financially in its restoration, tour its heirloom garden, view the Center's current art exhibit, and listen to Appalachian music recordings. Interested guests are also welcome to train as certified volunteers for the Center.

I mentioned at the last meeting that the Board and I want you as members to feel comfortable about voicing your opinions. This is your club and we want to know how we are doing. If there are any issues you would like to raise, but keep your anonymity, please feel free to write us with your suggestions, comments, or concerns at: DWC, P.O. Box 772, Dahlonega, GA 30533

As always, thank you for your continuing efforts.

Brita Borden, President

ARTS
This month’s meeting had the Arts Committee hosting, with guest speaker, Rosann Kent, from the Appalachian Studies Center. Rosann updated us on the current activities at the Center, and asked for our help and support in light of the cutbacks currently being proposed for NGCSU.

Thanks to all our members and the Arts Committee who decorated and provided the refreshments for the meeting; everything was scrumptious! DWC will be hosting and providing refreshments for the Student Art Show at the Cannery on Friday, March 19 (the date was changed from March 12). Thanks to all who signed up to help with this event. If you haven’t signed up,and would like to help or provide finger food, please let me know.

Carol Hesse, Arts Chair
